No Creed But Christ
First Christian Church of Winchester is a congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada which is an ecumenical and evangelical fellowship of locally governed congregations. The Church exists in three “manifestations”: the General, covering the United States and Canada with headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana; the Regional with 37 regions of which we are part of the Virginia Region with headquarters in Lynchburg; and local congregations of which there are 157 presently in Virginia. Disciples have no test of fellowship other than the affirmation that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16) and acceptance of him as Lord and Savior. Each member is encouraged to read and study, and to share in dialog with each other, as he/she comes to understand and find the words to speak of his/her faith.
Each congregation holds title to its own property and governs itself through the structures it puts in place. Congregations share in a covenant relationship with one another in the Regional and General Manifestations of the church. Each of the larger manifestations is governed by periodic meetings of delegates from the smaller one(s) and by established boards during the interims.
At each manifestation of the Church, members share in Christian ministries “from their own doorsteps to the ends of the earth.” At First Christian Church, we are an “Open and Inclusive Congregation, affirming the gifts and dignity of all people regardless of age, cultures, ethnic origins, faith backgrounds and styles of life.” In addition to offering a full range of opportunities for worship, fellowship, and study, we participate with other local churches in community missions to help those in need. We also help member and non-member individuals as we are able. We share financially and with fellowship and talents to give help to a small Disciples congregation in the suburbs of Washington, DC. We participate financially and personally in reaching out to the world through the Disciples Regional and General structures.
